Target 4.7

Bridge 47 works to promote and ensure that Target 4.7 is present in our societies. But what is Target 4.7?

In 2015, at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit in New York, Member States adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The agenda contains 17 Goals (SDGs), including a new global education goal (SDG 4). SDG 4 is to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” and has seven targets.

One of the targets of SDG 4 is Target 4.7 which aims to ensure that “by 2030 all learners acquire knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including among others through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship, and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development”

Target 4.7 reflects transformative education, which is the power of education to deliver knowledge, competencies, values, and skills that are necessary for current and future generations to transform the world into a more sustainable, just, inclusive, and resilient place. Every person on the planet must have access to sustainable development knowledge, global citizenship values, and 21st-century skills to be able to become more active as a global citizen and tackle our shared global challenges.

Transformative education holds within it the various objectives and methodologies in the types of education entailed in Target 4.7: education for sustainable development, global citizenship education, peace and human rights education and others. Transformative education, captured within Target 4.7, applied to learners of all ages and levels, and should exist within all the ways in which we learn (formal, non-formal and informal).
